History

• 2012 marks the 5th annual running of the Bedford 5k to Beat Lung Cancer
• Founded in 2008 by Jean St-Amand after his father Gerry was diagnosed in the fall of 2006 with lung cancer
• Spearheaded by Jean, the event is a family passion project.  Jean is a Bedford entrepreneur in marketing and he is assisted in this event by his younger brother Paul, an award-winning filmmaker, his mother Penny, a teacher and a long-time volunteer in Bedford.  Jean’s wife and two daughters, as well as his in-laws help out before, during and after the event.  The event has also received regular support from the Catholic Women’s League and the Knights of Columbus of St. Ignatius Parish.
• In its first four years, the event has raised more than $25,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society
• The event has grown from 180 registrants in 2008 to more than 300 in 2011.
